The exact qualifications needed for a job in sales will, of course, depend on the position at hand, but there are a number of general skills and qualities necessary to ensure you will enjoy a long and successful career in this ever growing and rewarding field.
Experience is one of the qualifications you may find that you need to land a job in sales but do not get discouraged if you are new to the industry or fresh out of college as plenty of companies are willing to give people their starting chance provided they are able to prove themselves after being hired.
Although you may not need a degree to secure a variety of lucrative positions in sales, having one certainly cannot hurt your chances and some companies may even require one. Others still will hire those without a degree and allow them to work while furthering their education for the purpose of promoting from within.
Some companies and corporations even have tuition reimbursement programs in place for salespeople giving you the chance to not only further your skills and knowledge but have your education paid for by your employer while still working.
Whether it is over the phone, in person, or even electronically, do you have a sixth sense when it comes to relating to people? Are you diplomatic with a sense of tact and the ability to put people at ease? Successful salespeople are a specific breed as not everyone is able to convince others that they simply must have a certain product or service whether it’s on a small or large scale.
The power of persuasion coupled with great presentation skills will give you a distinct edge in what is an entirely unique field. But do keep in mind that honesty is the best policy and this is certainly true for salespeople. Gaining and keeping customer’s trust is essential for making sales and things like insincerity or dishonesty will surely set you up for failure.
Never promise what you cannot deliver and never lie to a customer about a product or service and you will earn the reputation of a trusted salesperson that people will want to do business with.
The need for a “thick skin” is another definite requirement when it comes to a career in sales as rejection is a normal, ordinary part of the job. Cold calling, which involves calling new contacts for the purpose of securing fresh clientele, may also be a necessary skill for sales jobs.
You will also need perseverance if you want to have a career in sales along with the ability to stay focused. Goal setting is often a rather large part of various sales jobs on a multitude of levels so you should be comfortable with meeting quotas and staying competitive.
Meeting daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly goals may be a part of the job and an effective salesperson will need to be able to manage their time wisely and stay on task even when faced with unexpected adversity.
